MIKE HARRISON

Mike’s career trajectory showcases an inspiring blend of military experience, passion for the outdoors, and commitment to education and youth empowerment. His journey reflects not only his skills as a survival expert but also his deep desire to help young people grow and thrive.

His service in the Armed Forces, especially with operational tours in Afghanistan, no doubt shaped his discipline and leadership qualities, which he later transferred into his civilian life. As an instructor in Fieldcraft and Survival, Mike developed valuable teaching and mentoring skills, which he continued to build upon with qualifications like the NCFE instructor in Bushcraft and Survival and the Level 3 Forest School Instructor certification.

His time growing up in Cornwall provided him with a solid foundation in outdoor skills, and it’s clear that his passion for nature is something he’s carried with him throughout his career. This love for the outdoors led him to establish Green Trees Forest School, where he had the opportunity to work with young children, creating memorable experiences through toddler forest schools and holiday clubs. The fact that he was invited to demonstrate wild game preparation at the Padstow Food Festival along side the BBC’s Dr. Rupy Aujla highlights his unique expertise and ability to engage diverse audiences.

Mike’s transition into education, specifically teaching History and Outdoor Education in both primary and secondary SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) settings, speaks volumes about his adaptability and dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable students. His work in SEMH education likely deepened his commitment to mental health advocacy, which has been a cornerstone of his career.

Most recently, Mike’s focus has shifted to addressing the rising concerns around knife crime, particularly among youth. His approach is one of prevention through education, using bushcraft and survival programs to help local youth view knives as tools rather than weapons. This innovative program has the potential to reshape how young people relate to dangerous items and, in turn, reduce violence and criminal behaviour in his community.

His involvement in local initiatives like the government-led group to combat knife crime and his active role as a youth leader at Highworth Community Church further demonstrates his dedication to fostering positive change in his community. Mike’s holistic approach—combining practical skills with emotional and mental health support—gives him a unique position to make a lasting impact on those he teaches.

Mike’s story is one of transformation: from military service to bushcraft, from classroom to community activism, he is helping young people find their way, learn important life skills, and, ultimately, reshape their futures.
